CHAOS IN CAGE UPDATE -

The rains came, stopped, then came again on this tourney weekend. Steve Hall and his staff at Overbrook Golf Club did a tremendous job on this years tourney.  It was stormy on the courts for some partnerships, but by the time the National Weather Service had issued a tornado watch we were down to 4 teams standing. On the Men's side there was an all Waynesborough final as Vlatko Nadjek and Steve Beers held off Tim McAvoy and Paul Ridder 6-3, 7-5 in a sunday morning final. On the women's side - Andrea Dutton and Laurie Hissey knocked of defending champs Cooey Lyon and Leila Safford in a tight 3 setter - 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.  NEXT UP - PA STATES!!!

Delaware States Tourney Recap

40 players participated on November 8, 2008 in the Delaware State Paddle Tennis Championships at Greenville Country Club.   Teams from Western PA, Maryland , Philadelphia and Delaware played through some challenging early AM weather and enjoyed a very competitive PCQ tournament.  The Greenville Tennis staff  hosted a full day of great paddle, favors/prizes, food and drink for all the players at one of our sport’s finest Paddle Huts.

The top seeded defending champs- Todd Marvin and Scott Falatek- won again this year in a 3 set final against the new and formidable team of Vlatko Najdek and Bruce Redpath by a score of 6-0, 5-7, 6-0.  Marvin/Falatek had an easier time in their semi-final match as they won convincingly over Greenville ’s paddle pro- Simon Peppiatt- and Peter Redpath.  Najdek/B Redpath cruised past Ted Easter and Jeff Lyon in the other semi-final match.

In other match play, Steve Reineger and Andrew Hocker exacted some measure of revenge by winning the quarter-final consolation match over the always tough team of Bruce Sopko and Drew Friel.  Pittsburgh ’s Allan Quackenbush and Craig Pitcarin earned the Reprieve title by defeating Tom Burt and Brendan Kirk while Chris Packer and Brian Aguillar won the “gut bucket” title.

Given the success of this year’s event, the tournament will look to grow into a full 32 team draw next year as Scott Falatek and Greenville’s Todd Marvin attempt to “three-peat” as champs.

        Week 5 - Controversy on Court 4

For the second week in a row, a Waynesborough 1 team has been defeated on Court 4 by a goggled player. Once shunned by the APTA, MAPTA and other paddle authorities, this trend appears to be with us in D1. This week’s victims were none other than famed derivatives expert Jim Ryan and future MAPTA Hall of Famer Tom Safford. Incensed that there is something innately unfair and there could be no other reason as to why he lost last night, Jim has vowed to fund a study at MIT and would like to see the goggle banned in future competitions. You may see Jim this weekend picketing at various locations this Saturday during the MAPTA tournament with signs stating "Ban the Goggles". MAPTA President Andrew Sorrentino, whom by the way was not available to play or apparently watch the match stated that he wished the tournament participants would ignore Jim at the venues and hope this will all go away some day. Tim Curvan, this week's goggled partner thought that Jim was just a sore loser as Mr. Safford took his second consecutive week’s loss to a goggled player in stride and could not have been a nicer gentleman. Oh by the way, Waynesborough 1 (5-0) defeated Aronimink (3-2) by a score of 8 sets to 4 to remain undefeated. The highlight of the evening was Drew Friel's imitation of Alice of Mel's Diner from the former TV show "Alice" serving and catering to the Way1 boys well into the evening. This came after his straight sets victory with Brendan Kirk over the once unbeatable Tim McAvoy and Hank Oberly. Waynesborough’s very own Dirk Diggler won his fifth match of the season and he can be seen this weekend at MAPTA tournament with last year’s Ninth Man Award winner, Vlatko Najdek.

Vic Mead (2-3) pulled off the upset of the year for their second consecutive win over the formerly undefeated Philly Cricket (4-1), leaving Waynesborough 1 as the only undefeated team in D1. Cricket took courts 1&2 while Vic Mead took courts 3&4. The match came down to the third set of court 2 in which HG Haskell and Pete Morrow won 7-5 to give Vic Mead a 7 sets to 5 victory. Cricket will have to get their acts together as next week they take on Martins Dam while Vic Mead goes for their third consecutive victory against Merion.

Martins (5-1) did not look past Overbrook (1-5) this week in their victory as they have had their eyes set on handing Philly Cricket their first loss but were beat to the punch by none other than Vic Mead this week.

Philly Country (2-3) earned their second victory of the season over Waynesborough 2 (1-4). Captain Paul Ridder has purchased eight pairs of goggles in preparation for next weeks match with Waynesborough 1 as he thinks he has stumbled across that teams Kryptonite. Paul was quoted “We beat this team last year without goggles and created much controversy, wait till you see next week’s scoreboard.”

Greenville (2-3) also earned their second victory of the season over Merion (1-4) and earned themselves a spot out of the cellar. Even though Merion fielded a “woman”, they could not pull off the victory. Let it be known that Cooey Burkhart Lyon did win her match on the third court. This writer will have no further comments on this match……

 Last Weeks Predictions:

Vegas went 1 for 1 with last week’s prediction, as they had Waynesborough as a 2 favorite over Aronimink and 3-5 for the year.

 Highlight Matches of the Week:

Martins Dam (4-1) @Philly Cricket (5-0) (Martins is a 1 court favorite)

Waynesborough 2 (1-4) @Waynesborough 1 (5-0), this match up is always very controversial and MAPTA board members will be on site to make sure there are no shenanigans going on. It should be noted that Way1 will hold its annual team meeting at The GAP prior to the match, should be an interesting evening.
